The forest seemed endless as Aurora and Lila ran, the sound of snapping twigs and the rustle of leaves filling the air. Every shadow felt like a threat, every whisper of wind a predator's breath. Aurora's heart thundered in her chest, not just from exertion but from the
overwhelming fear clawing at her.
"Keep going!" Lila urged, her voice steady but strained. "We have to put as much distance as we can between us and that clearing."
Aurora nodded, her breath coming in shallow gasps. The twins stirred restlessly, their movements erratic as if responding to her fear. She placed a protective hand over her abdomen, her resolve hardening.noveldrama
They reached a narrow stream and paused, Lila scanning the area with sharp eyes. "We'll rest for a moment," she said, her tone calm but urgent. "Stay low."
Aurora crouched by the water, her legs trembling. "Do you think Cassian's okay?" she whispered.
"He's strong," Lila replied, though her expression betrayed her worry. "And he has his pack. He'll hold them off long enough for us to find safety."
Aurora nodded, though her chest tightened at the thought of Cassian facing Fenrir and Arianna. She couldn't shake the image of his wolf, fierce and unyielding, standing between her and danger. The forest grew eerily quiet, and Lila stiffened. "We're not alone."
Aurora's breath caught as the faint sound of footsteps reached her ears. Lila grabbed a branch from the ground, holding it like a weapon as she placed herself between Aurora and the approaching noise.
Moments later, a figure emerged from the shadows. Aurora's stomach twisted as she recognized the smirk on Arianna's face.
"Well, isn't this cozy?" Arianna said, her voice dripping with mockery. "Running through the forest like frightened prey. How fitting."
Lila stepped forward, her grip tightening on the branch. "Stay back," she warned, her tone cold and unwavering.
Arianna laughed, the sound low and menacing. "And what are you going to do? Fight me off with a stick? How quaint."
Aurora stood, her hands trembling but her gaze steady. "What do you want, Arianna?"
"What I've always wanted," Arianna replied, her eyes narrowing. "To put an end to this farce. You don't belong here, Aurora. You never did."
Aurora's voice trembled with defiance. "You're wrong. This is my home now, and I won't let you take it from me."
Arianna's smirk widened. "Oh, I'm not taking anything. I'm just making sure you don't have the chance to ruin anything else."
Before Lila could react, Arianna lunged, her speed unnaturally fast. Aurora stumbled back, her hand instinctively covering her stomach as Lila stepped in to intercept her. The branch connected with Arianna's side, but the force barely slowed her down. Arianna snarled, her eyes glowing with rage as she knocked Lila aside. Aurora screamed, her heart pounding as she tried to move away, but Arianna was already closing the distance.
Suddenly, a blur of motion shot through the trees, slamming into Arianna with brutal force. Aurora fell to the ground, her breath catching as she realized it was Cassian.
His wolf form towered over Arianna, his teeth bared as he let out a deafening snarl. Arianna scrambled to her feet, her smirk replaced by a snarl of her own.
"You should've stayed out of this, Cassian," she spat, her voice dripping with venom.
Cassian shifted, his eyes blazing as he stepped toward her. "This is my territory. My pack. And you're not welcome here."
Arianna's gaze flicked to Aurora, her expression twisting with fury. "You think she's worth all of this? She'll betray you, just like she betrayed Fenrir."
Cassian's voice was cold and steady. "The only betrayal here is yours."
Arianna lunged again, but Cassian was faster. He intercepted her with a powerful swipe, sending her sprawling to the ground.
"You've lost," Cassian said, his voice low and dangerous. "Leave, or you won't get another chance."
Arianna glared at him, her chest heaving with rage. "This isn't over," she hissed before retreating into the shadows.
Cassian turned to Aurora, his expression softening as he knelt beside her. "Are you hurt?"
Aurora shook her head, her hands still trembling. "I'm okay," she whispered.
Lila approached, rubbing her arm where she had fallen. "She'll be back," she said grimly. Cassian nodded, his jaw tightening. "Not if I can help it."
He helped Aurora to her feet, his gaze steady and reassuring. "Let's get you back to safety." Aurora hesitated, her heart swelling with gratitude. "Thank you, Cassian. For everything."
His eyes softened, and he nodded. "You're part of this pack, Aurora. I'll always protect you."
As they made their way back toward the central grounds, Aurora felt a flicker of hope amid the chaos. But deep down, she knew the battle was far from over.
